Local festival packages itself into boxes due to lockdown.
We were determined to spread happiness to people in Elland, despite not being able to run Welland as planned this year.
With a theme of ‘Positive Futures’ the festival went online, taking the fun directly into people’s homes. Activities included weekly ‘Brews and Grooves’ classes online for older residents, online workshops for local schools and the ‘Well and Happy Box.’
Our Artistic Director, Samantha McCormick explains:
“We couldn’t get together at Welland festival this year, so we decided to help people enjoy the celebration at home. For some festival-goers that meant Zoom classes but for those unable to access the internet, we put our festival in a box!
We came up with the idea of Well and Happy gift boxes, delivered to your door. We handpicked some wellbeing goodies inspired by our community and made up the specially designed boxes. The pandemic has been a lonely and challenging experience for some, so we spread some joy.”
With the help of local sponsors Suma and a small grant from Calderdale Council, Curious Motion was able to bring this unique festival in a box to 50 vulnerable adults in Elland. The boxes included seeds, tea, luxurious toiletries and activities, all specially curated to improve wellbeing and happiness.
The festival boxes proved extremely popular and much appreciated by residents. One happy recipient, Jane, said she would treasure her box:
“Receiving a Well and Happy box was a wonderful surprise – it’s a reminder that someone is thinking of you, which has really lifted my spirits. I’ve loved exploring the activities and enjoying the treats too!”
This is just the start of new ideas and innovative ways for Curious Motion to bring joy to the people of Calderdale:
“This project has shown us how a small gesture makes all the difference, particularly regarding isolation and a sense of connection in these uncertain times. It’s been such a success that we hope to be able to offer boxes across Calderdale in the future. Watch this space! In the meantime, you can get involved in our online dance classes and coffee mornings, running weekly!” Samantha McCormick
